The potential that lies in our genome has excited science since the completion of the human genome project in 2003. Genetically, we are all unique, there are obvious differences like height, hair colour and other physical features, but there are also unique differences that we are unable to see. These differences can include the way we react to certain types of exercise, the way that our body processes toxins and the efficiency of our system to metabolise nutrients.
Within each gene, there are points of variations, called Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms, or SNP for short. SNPs influence the function of the gene by altering the instructions, similar to changing one word in a complete sentence to change it’s meaning. Polymorphisms are neither negative nor positive, they are simply differences. Understanding these differences empowers us with crucial information for shaping our daily exercise and nutrition choices.
How do you know the genes in your DNA test provide real, actionable information?
DNAFit exclusively use only the most researched genes for their reports. Each of the genes has to pass a strict inclusion protocol before they are included for use in the reports.
Genetics is only one part of the complete picture when it comes down to health, so DNAFit don’t overstate the application of genetics in the real world. The real value is obtained from understanding your genetic profile in conjunction with your goals, lifestyle and environment – the whole picture.
DNAFit are committed to maintaining the highest scientific standards in the industry. In 2015, they published a peer-reviewed study in ‘biology of sport’ evaluating the effectiveness of the DNAFit approach. DNAFit genetically matched training was found to lead to almost triple the rate of improvement over mismatched training.
Do genes tell us everything we need to know?
Not at all! Genes don’t work alone and definitely don’t tell us the whole story, we know through the extensive study of Epigenetic’s that genes interact with our environment and more importantly that modifying or changing our environment can modify our “Phenotype”. The great news is that we have control over parts of our environment, specifically diet and exercise, which empowers us to work to create the best phenotype for our lifestyle.
How long will it take to receive my results?
Processing takes approximately 14 days from the date your sample is received at the lab.
As soon as processing is complete, the lab will report your data to DNAFit and after the quality review, DNAFit will release your results and they will be made available by secure log in through their website. They do not include a printed report through the mail or provide your data via email.
How is my data stored and data protected?
DNAFit is a registered company with the DATA Protection Commissioner in the UK. Your results are confidential and will not be shared with anybody outside the laboratory without your consent. The data itself is stored under a Serial ID instead of a name so that the results remain anonymous.
Once your results have been generated, your DNA is securely destroyed as per the lab quality manual and process. If you would like to have all of your data deleted, you can contact the client services department at info@dnafit.com
